Poise - By Steve Keefe

Poise:  Keeping your composure in spite of the circumstances.  Poise requires maturity, it is about remaining mentally and emotionally balanced at all times no matter what chaos is occurring around you.

The element of poise can make you appear much stronger in those around you than can your talent alone.  We must all work hard to not show weakness in words, facial gestures, or body language.  No matter what is being said or done to you, if you can maintain your poise and demonstrate that you can't be rattled, you will be more effective in whatever you are doing.  It is when we breakdown and don't maintain our poise that we are railed off track and rendered ineffective.

Recently, I had an experience where instead of standing tall and acting like I had been there before, I allowed my emotions to creep in and did not maintain my poise.  The outcome was less than what I had hoped for.  As I reflect on that experience and the circumstances, I would have been better served to maintain my poise, and pull the emotions out of it... sometimes easier said than done.

When we maintain our poise, those around us will see that they can not succeed in robbing you of your poise and they will know that they can not dictate your reaction.

At challenging moments, listen to that positive voice in your head that says "I am good" and "I can do this" tune out the negative and sooner or later it won't be there any more.  You will maintain your confidence and poise.

When you are able to show poise as an individual, you will set the example for others how to handle tough situations.  I try to always show to my team the path to success, I want to show them that I have been there before and demonstrate to them the way.

Poise is not about winning and losing, you can lose and still maintain your poise, however you will win more often if you are able to maintain your composure... your poise.

Have a great Friday... It looks like it is going to be a great weekend.
